The True Meaning of Baptism, Explained
What is baptism? To start with, it’s one of the most important and celebrated events in a Christian’s life.
In fact, it’s regarded so highly that some Christians feel intimidated—even pressured—to complete their baptism ceremony. On behalf of all Christians, we deeply apologize if you feel this way.
Although baptism is important, no one should ever feel forced to receive it. Furthermore, authentic baptism can’t be forced.
It signifies an internal choice, not just an external gesture. Real baptism is a conscious act of will that requires understanding.
So today, we want to explain the true meaning of baptism so that you can make up your own mind. We’ll also describe the benefits of getting baptized and whether scripture requires baptism for all Christians.
What Is Baptism?
Our word for “baptism” comes from the Greek word “baptidzo,” which means to dip or immerse. The ceremony itself usually involves dipping the baptized in water (completely submerged) and then raising them back out. Although there are a few variations of this method, they always involve water as a symbol of purification.
Baptisms are typically performed in a church. At each of these church services, the pastor may baptize a single candidate or many. Technically, though, a baptism can be performed anywhere, as long as there’s an ordained pastor and plenty of water.
Sometimes, the baptism candidate gives a testimonial of their faith before they enter the water. The pastor performing the baptism has the candidate confirm that they understand and agree to the baptism.
The Meaning of Baptism
The Bible describes the original baptism ritual, performed by John the Baptist, as a “baptism of repentance.” It “officialized” the candidate’s decision to turn from their life of sin and follow God wholeheartedly. In this way, it’s sort of like a wedding ceremony, a promise of commitment and devotion.
The New Baptism
The resurrection of Christ Jesus gave additional meaning to the ceremony of baptism. The apostle Paul states the new meaning of baptism very clearly in Romans 6:3-4 (NIV).
“Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”
Is Baptism Required For Salvation?
Again, you can compare baptism to a wedding. Can two unmarried people love and cherish each other until death? Of course they can.
But the wedding:
- Makes it official
- Declares it publicly
- Invokes God’s blessing
This is exactly what baptism does. It does not affect your salvation.
Your salvation comes through belief and declaration. That is, you believe that God forgives your sins through Jesus Christ and you declare that Christ is your Lord.
What Does Baptism Mean to You?
Ultimately, the true meaning of baptism is not an expert from a textbook. Your baptism is a personal choice with personal significance.
If you feel called to get baptized, carefully consider this information and bring it to God in prayer. When you’re ready to take this step, speak to your pastor.
