The Do’s and Don’ts of Choosing an Instagram Profile Picture

Francesco Gutkowski

Over 1000 photos are uploaded to Instagram every second. That does not even include video content. So when people are scrolling through the feed, how can you make your profile stand out?

One way is with a great image on your profile. Read on as we discuss the do’s and don’t of selecting an Instagram profile picture.

  1. Do Make a Decision Between Work or Play

This depends on if you are using your profile for personal use or business. If you mix up the two, it becomes very confusing for anyone who stumbles across your page.

A business profile picture on Instagram is simple. You just need to load in your logo. This also makes it recognizable in your feed and stories.

Personal photos can still be used for business, but only if the brand is built around you. For example, if you are a consultant or celebrity personality it would work.

  1. Don’t Forget to Crop

When choosing a profile picture on Instagram, you don’t get a lot of space to work with. As the space is circular, it is best to use a picture that is a perfect square, also known as a 1:1 ratio.

You only get 110 pixels by 110 pixels, which is not a lot. If you have a face picture, then crop it from the shoulder up making sure you are not too close or far away. As it is so small, steer clear of text and stick to an image.

  1. Do Use Color

To grab attention, using a pop of color is one of the best Instagram tips. If you have a logo for a picture, you are probably doing that anyway. However, it can also be done with a portrait.

If you are wearing dull clothing, make sure you have a bright background behind you. When you are wearing bright clothing, use a darker background. Be aware that the color used can have an impact on the emotion of the viewer, creating an impression through color psychology.

  1. Don’t Follow Trends

Trends come and go extremely quickly on Instagram and if you choose a picture that is indicative of one, you will have to update it frequently. When you don’t change it you look out of touch, so pick a picture that remains evergreen. If you want to give it a push then you could also consider getting free likes on Instagram.

  1. Do Use Good Lighting

You don’t have to be a photography expert to get a well-lit, cute Instagram profile picture. All you need is a natural light source, such as a window, and a comfortable chair.

Sit down and experiment with getting the light on the side of the face. To soften it, you can place a lamp or other light source behind you. Try to avoid anything that creates heavy shadows.
