How to spend a great night in Melbourne
‘m writing this blog to give you my ideas on what things you should do when visiting Melbourne. I hope these help make your time in the city more memorable.
– Eat at one of the many restaurants along Flinders Lane (Port Melbourne) like “Flower Drum” or “Toko”. There is also a place called “Bluestone Steakhouse” that has amazing steaks, but it’s bit pricey.
– Catch a game with AFL team Hawthorn playing at their home ground, Aurora Stadium (Moorabbin). If Hawthorn aren’t playing, then go to see St Kilda play at Etihad Stadium (Docklands). Other teams include Essendon and Carlton. Go to an Aussie rules football game if you want to drink, yell strange things at players and experience one of the most unique atmospheres in Australia.
– If AFL isn’t your thing, then try one of the local leagues around Melbourne. The best ones are probably the NBL team Melbourne United or the WNBL team Dandenong Rangers. Also check out their games if they’re playing against other teams from Australia!
– Visit St Kilda Beach for some sunbathing/swimming/beach volleyball/even just walking along it. It’s a great place to hang out on a summer day with friends or family. On Christmas Day people even have Christmas lunch here! It might be cold, but you’ll have fun anyways… unless you don’t like the cold.
– Surf at Torquay or Bells Beach, but be careful of sharks! You can go on a boat and catch some amazing waves and see some great sights while you’re there. Other good surfing beaches include Aireys Inlet and Anglesea (but beware of rips!). Make sure you hire a board if you don’t know how to surf though.
– Go wine tasting at the Yarra Valley. It’s probably more famous for its beer than its wine, so it’s another cool place to visit if you like beer too. There are many different wineries/beer breweries around the area that offer free tastings, so enjoy yourself! If you get thirsty during your trip try some of the local ciders too!
– Go to a comedy show at one of Melbourne’s many comedy venues such as The Comic’s Lounge (Fitzroy), Comics At Large (South Yarra) or The Last Laugh Comedy Theatre (Richmond). These places typically have stand up comedians, some better than others. Some big names that have played here include Wil Anderson and Dave Hughes.
– Harbour Boat Cruise: Hop on a harbour cruise boat and see all the sights around Port Phillip Bay. You can go with any number of companies along St Kilda Pier, but my favourite is probably “RitchiesOn Water”. Prices are fair for what you get and they even take photos so you can capture the moment… if you want them too.
– Visit the Great Ocean Road during the day or night. If you go during the day, it’s really nice to see all of the sights along this long stretch of road that follows the coastline, but if you want to do something different then go at sunset or nighttime when you can see some amazing stars in the sky. Watch out for kangaroos though! They’re dangerous! One almost attacked me when I was in my car once.
– Go to a comedy festival in Melbourne throughout January including The Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF), The Adelaide Fringe Festival and The Brisbane Comedy Festival etc… There are many other smaller festivals around Australia too.
