What To Do if You Drop Your iPhone in Water

Clare Louise

Dropping your iPhone in the toilet, in a pool of beer, or into any other liquid is every iPhone user’s nightmare. And it does happen to plenty of people.

We certainly understand how it can happen: you’re checking Instagram in the bathroom or texting your friend from the pool. But what do you do if you drop your iPhone in water? Is it game over for your device?

Luckily, it’s not too late for your iPhone once it hits water, but the sooner you take action, the better your chance of saving your phone. Read on to learn more!

What To Do if You Drop Your iPhone in the Water?

When you accidentally submerge your iPhone, you probably don’t pay much thought to what’s going on inside. Be a river, a swimming hole, or, most often, a kitchen sink.

However, there are a few things you can do to try and salvage it. First, turn it off immediately. If it’s on, the water can cause shorts in the circuitry.

Then, remove the SIM card and any other external components. Finally, dry it off as much as possible and put it in a bowl of rice. The rice will absorb the water and hopefully your phone will still work. Leave it in the rice for at least 24 hours before turning it on again.

If it didn’t work out, you must look for a skilled technician that performs cell phone repairs. They will likely have the proper tools and knowledge to fix your phone.

Use Desiccants for Your Wet iPhone

Don’t bother trying to power it up to see whether it still functions. Could, but taking a peek at it could cause it to malfunction permanently.

If you manage to get every drop of liquid off the exterior of your iPhone, there may still be some moisture on the inside. The silica gel packets or desiccants are one of the safest ways to dry your phone. Users get extra packets of silica gel when they buy electronic items. They are also easy to find in any big store.

They do a better job of soaking up moisture because they don’t touch the phone very much. Put some silica gel packets on top of and below your phone. Let them soak up the water inside the device.

What To Do Next After Doing This Steps?

So you drop your iPhone in the water and have been storing it for a few days in silica gel in the hopes that it will dry off. Now what do we do?

If you think the thing has dried out enough, you can try turning it back on. If this does not work, you can try putting it back in the rice or desiccant and wait a bit longer.

If it doesn’t work, the iPhone will need to be taken apart and examined from the inside. Get in touch with a reliable cell phone repair shop to schedule an appointment and find out if your phone may be saved.
