How to Make Flying Easy

Crawford Miller

Around 45,000 flights are managed by the FAA each day. More than 10 million passengers buy airline tickets each year.

If you’re getting on a plane anytime soon, these airport hacks will help make flying easy.

From what you pack to what you wear, a little bit of planning will go a long way for a smooth airport experience. Read on as we cover everything you need to know about getting through airport security quickly.

Start by Pack Wisely

You can speed up the screening process by packing properly.

On most airlines, you’re allowed to take one personal item and one carry-on with you. Anything else will need to be checked.

Be sure to know the size and weight limits of carry-ons, though. If you arrive at security with a large carry-on, they’ll send you back to the beginning.

There are limits on what’s allowed in your carry-on, too. Containers with liquid or gel must be smaller than 3.4 ounces.

Powders can be questionable at some airports. Do yourself a favor and pack these items in your checked bags. Click here for a list of all prohibited items.

Medications are exempt from the carry-on rules. Even if it’s liquid over the size limit, it will be allowed. It just needs to be reasonable for the length of your trip.

Dress for Successful Security Checks

You can make flying easy by dressing mindfully.

During the airport security check, you’ll be required to take off your jacket and shoes. Choose items that are easy to get off and back on.

Any metal accessories may trigger the metal detectors. Avoid metal belt buckles and large metal jewelry. You’ll have to remove these types of items.

You’ll have to take everything out of your pockets, as well. Save time by doing that before you arrive so that everything is already in your carry-on.

TSA PreCheck vs. Clear

Trusted-traveler programs like TSA PreCheck and Clear are designed to get you through the airport security check faster. If you qualify and submit the fees, you’ll be able to skip some of the protocols.

With TSA PreCheck, you’ll go through a background check and screening process in advance. It’s for low-risk flyers and allows you to skip things like removing your jacket and accessories.

Clear is a high-tech system that uses biometric data for automated screening. You’ll bypass TSA security entirely and walk through a kiosk that confirms your identity digitally.

The Clear kiosks are only at a few airports so far. TSA PreCheck works everywhere managed by TSA. Either of these can make flying easy because you’ll get through security much faster.

Make Flying Easy With an FBO

You might reach a point where even the benefits of trusted-traveler programs are still not the quick airport experience you really want. Consider making your flight plans at a Fixed Base Operator (FBO) airport instead.

An FBO airport is a private terminal nestled within standard airports. FBOs offer an elevated travel experience. Plus, notably, the security check process is much faster — usually less than 30 minutes even at busy airports.

A Few Extra Tips

There are a lot of small things you can do before and during the airport security check to make flying easy.

Download your airline’s mobile app. Use opportunities for early check-in. Have your identification documents ready when you arrive.
