All About Bomber Jackets

Crawford Miller

Almost every modern man’s closet contains at least one bomber jacket, characterised by a shorter length, a zipper or buttons, a cropped hem, knitted cuffs, an air of swagger, and a wealth of wearable options. The jacket’s initial usefulness and purpose — to serve pilots in the military — has been lost in its generalisation since there are many different kinds of men’s bomber jackets, like a black sheer bomber jacket.

However, the bomber jacket has become more than a historical artefact; it has abandoned its military garb to become a modern fashion staple.

The 1920s marked the beginning of the commercial sale of leather jackets. In the past, they served the military purpose of protecting the wearer from the Cold when worn by troops. However, a wide variety of leather coats gained popularity as time progressed. There are five main categories of leather. Full grain leather, top grain leather, split grain leather, ‘bi-cast’ leather, and bonded leather are all viable options for constructing a leather jacket. Even within the realm of style, variation exists.

Why is it called a Bomber Jacket?

The military’s adoption of the bomber jacket as a standard issue may have inspired the garment’s moniker. History shows that military pilots wore the first bomber jackets in World Wars I and II, where the word “bomber” comes from.

More excellent Immunity to the Cold

The first thing that comes to mind when discussing the advantages of purchasing a leather bomber jacket is its added security. This pertains to a particular fashion, namely the MA-1 standing collar kind. Flight jackets with a flipped collar are helpful because they protect the wearer from the elements.

Recent shifts in fashion have also brought improvements in collar materials. A nylon collar, for instance, may withstand rain and snow better than a leather one.

No longer are flying jackets thought to be exclusively for guys. There is a plethora of options when it comes to women’s leather jackets in the pilot design.

Knitted or Braided Elastic

Although every other leather jacket now includes braided elastic at the cuffs and waist, this detail was first seen on bomber jackets. The first benefit of using ribbed elastic is that it provides a secure fit, protecting the cuff or waist from wear and tear. Because of the elasticity it gives, neither the cuffs nor the waist will wrinkle. The second perk is that the elastic is an insulating agent and provides more protection from chilly wind by clinging to the skin.

Robustness

Genuine leather jackets last a long time, as is common knowledge. Nonetheless, bomber jackets are made more robust than their conventional counterparts. As was previously indicated, the ribbed elastic detailing of this design serves to preserve the leather. The elastic keeps the jacket from sagging and drooping over time.

Comfort

You would hope your $1,000 jacket would be as cosy as your pyjamas. Buying an uncomfortable leather jacket for a guy is as much of a mistake as buying an unpleasant one for a female. Leather coats are not universally cosy like bomber jackets. That’s because a high-quality black sheer bomber jacket will have a soft lining that’s roomy in the chest, arms, and other perspiration-prone places. While on the go, your motions will be less strenuous.

If you like wearing coats, bomber jackets are the T-shirt equivalent of henleys. That is to say, for whatever reason, they provide an immediate increase in your perceived attractiveness. Whatever it is about bomber jackets—the rugged military style or the versatility as a layering piece—they make every guy look better.
