What is a Push Bet?

Crawford Miller

If you are unfamiliar with sports betting, you might never have heard the term push bet. However, you need to be familiar with this concept if you intend to place sports bets to avoid being caught unawares. Unfortunately, in sports betting, as with many other things in life, claiming ignorance is not going to get you off the hook for placing a bet and then losing it. By placing a bet, you confirm that accept its terms and conditions and cannot appeal the outcome.

Here is what you should know about push bets:

More bettors than before

Several US states have legalized online sports betting, while some have gone as far as making legal provisions for online casinos. Pennsylvania’s residents and visitors can utilize a PA sports betting app to place their wagers on a comprehensive list of sports the state legislature has approved for online sportsbooks. Operators in other states have similar offerings which bettors place wagers online.

The number of sports bets has risen drastically in US states with online legal sports betting as it is convenient and accessible. This move has introduced more players to the world of sports betting. This online growth model has secured licensed operators a substantial income boost.

What is a push bet?

A push bet occurs when there is a tie between a bettor and his sportsbook. It is most likely to occur in spread betting and totals betting options. For instance, a bettor bets on a team to cover a two-point spread in their match against another team. If this happens and it is identical to the two-point spread set by an oddsmaker, it is a push bet.

A bettor has neither won nor lost their bet, equaling a sportsbook’s bet. Therefore, a sportsbook operator refunds bettors their wager amount, and they do not win anything.

Win, draw, and loss

A game that ends in a draw does not qualify as a push bet. Bettors had the option of betting on a win, draw, or loss. If they bet on a win, a draw means they lost their wager and will not receive a refund.

The rise of online betting has brought the issue of push bets to the forefront of many gamblers’ consciousness. They might not have understood how it works. However, most would agree that a push bet is better than a loss as the gambler at least gets their wager amount refunded.
